Fincantieri is an Italian shipbuilding group founded in 1959 and headquartered in Trieste, building cruise ships, naval vessels, offshore and specialized units across shipyards in Italy and abroad.
Beyond traditional shipbuilding, the group has expanded into uncrewed maritime systems and autonomy. In October 2025 Fincantieri launched DEEP, its first integrated underwater drone system, during a demonstration at the Naval Support and Experimentation Center in La Spezia. DEEP combines a network of early-warning underwater sensors, a command and control center for real-time mission coordination, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and an AI-based data processing platform. The system supports dual civil and defense applications, including protection of underwater infrastructure such as seabed cables and pipelines, port security, and environmental monitoring, with the ability to detect intruders at long range. Its vehicles operate at varying autonomy levels, from manual control to pre-programmed AI-coordinated missions enabling swarm behaviors. Autonomous development is led primarily through the group subsidiary IDS - Ingegneria dei Sistemi, which develops the SAND (Surface Advanced Naval Drone) uncrewed surface vehicle and related platforms.
In 2025 IDS signed a memorandum of understanding with Next Geosolutions to develop USVs for the oil and gas and offshore renewable energy sectors, optimized for open-sea environmental monitoring, inspection, and infrastructure integrity control, with launch and recovery from traditional naval units. Fincantieri also secured an exclusive worldwide license to commercialize Eni's Clean Sea hybrid underwater robot and is collaborating with maritime technology startup Defcomm on autonomous surface vehicles. The group is listed on Borsa Italiana under ticker FCT.
