Waymo Plans to Launch Robotaxi Service in Munich by 2027

Waymo announced its intention to introduce a robotaxi service in Munich, following the establishment of a local entity in Germany. The company must navigate mapping, testing, and regulatory challenges before commencing commercial operations. Initially, Waymo will manually drive vehicles to map Munich's streets, followed by testing autonomous vehicles with human safety drivers. The significance of Waymo's entry into Germany lies in the country's pioneering legal framework for Level 4 autonomous driving, established over five years ago. This framework has positioned Germany as a key location for autonomous vehicle testing, attracting various companies, including Mobileye and Volkswagen, which currently hold testing permits. Waymo is collaborating with Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority and local officials to secure the necessary approvals for commercial operations. Looking ahead, Waymo anticipates launching limited robotaxi services by the end of 2027, eventually expanding to all riders upon receiving regulatory clearance. The company is also preparing to compete in other markets, such as London, where it plans to launch a commercial service in 2026, facing competition from local startups and established partners.
