The Navy has announced the creation of a new Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Robotic and Autonomous Systems (DRPM RAS) as part of a leadership restructuring. Chris Miller, currently leading the portfolio acquisition executive Maritime office, will take on the role of acting DRPM RAS, reporting to William Toti, who is performing the duties of undersecretary of the Navy. This initiative aims to enhance the development and acquisition of RAS capabilities within the Navy and Marine Corps. This move is significant as it reflects the Navy's recognition of the need for a more efficient approach to robotic and autonomous systems. According to Toti, the current processes are outdated and do not meet the urgent needs of Sailors and Marines. The establishment of DRPM RAS is intended to bring about faster decision-making and clearer accountability in line with Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao's directives. Looking ahead, the Navy is considering relocating DRPM RAS staff closer to Fleet warfighters to improve collaboration and ensure that operational feedback is integrated into capability development.
