XPENG Unveils GroundingPI, a Vision Model Enhancing Robot Learning Efficiency

XPENG has introduced GroundingPI, a visual perception model with approximately four billion parameters aimed at improving object localization for AI systems. Developed in collaboration with academic institutions, the model has demonstrated effective performance in simulated humanoid manipulation tasks, requiring fewer training demonstrations. The announcement, made on November 4, highlights an open research initiative involving Peking University and the University of Hong Kong, although no deployment in commercial products has been disclosed.
The significance of GroundingPI lies in its ability to represent locations using points and bounding boxes, enabling precise requests for object parts, such as identifying a cup's handle. The model employs a shared coordinate vocabulary for various tasks, including object detection and spatial perception. The research paper, published on September 30, reported an aggregate score of 73.68 across 34 benchmarks, indicating its potential for enhancing humanoid robot learning efficiency in simulation environments.
XPENG's research indicates that GroundingPI can improve learning efficiency even with reduced training data, as evidenced by its performance in RoboTwin 2.0 and RoboCasa-GR1 experiments. However, challenges remain in small-object localization and text recognition tasks, and the question of reliable physical deployment is yet to be addressed. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
