Robot Showcases Traditional Lacquer Fan Craft at Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival

The first International Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival in Hong Kong, held from September 17 to 27 at Victoria Park, featured a theme of reunion and showcased lanterns from 20 countries, including traditional Nanjing Qinhuai lanterns and local Hong Kong crafts. Zhixing Robotics was invited to demonstrate the intricate art of lacquer fan making using their advanced robotic technology.

Lacquer fan crafting is a traditional intangible cultural heritage that requires precision in various steps, such as the force used to take the fan, the depth of immersion in lacquer, and the speed of rotation. Zhixing's wheeled humanoid robot, Han Yue, utilized proprietary technologies in force control, 3D visual perception, and adaptive grasping to accurately execute the entire fan-making process. This performance highlighted the blend of mechanical precision and the poetic essence of lacquer art.

The choice of the lantern festival as a venue was strategic, as it attracts a diverse audience, making the robot's artistic demonstration more relatable than a technical showcase in a museum. The unique patterns created by the robot's craftsmanship added aesthetic value, allowing viewers to appreciate the cultural significance of the lacquer fan, thus bridging advanced robotics with traditional Chinese heritage.

Editor's Note

The integration of robotics into traditional crafts like lacquer fan making showcases the potential for technology to enhance cultural heritage. This event highlights the importance of public engagement in technology demonstrations, particularly in settings that attract diverse audiences. As robotics continues to evolve, the intersection of art and technology may pave the way for new forms of expression and appreciation in various industries.
