NVIDIA Announces Release of Next-Gen AI Upscaling Technology DLSS 5 This Fall

NVIDIA revealed on July 20 that it will launch its next-generation AI upscaling technology, DLSS 5, in the fall of 2026 during the SIGGRAPH 2026 conference. This new technology will utilize a neural network to generate entire screen patches, enhancing the realism of rendered images through a one-step pixel space diffusion transformer model.

The introduction of DLSS 5 marks a significant shift from previous versions, which relied on reconstruction methods. According to Edward Liu, Director of Applied Deep Learning Research, DLSS 5 will add a new category of 'generation' to its capabilities, positioning AI as an enhancer of graphics rather than a replacement. This advancement is expected to provide developers with more control over the rendering process, including automatic character recognition and targeted enhancements.

In related news, Microsoft and French startup Mistral announced a strategic partnership on July 21 to expand AI computing capabilities in Europe. This partnership aims to enable European companies to utilize frontier AI while retaining data management rights. Mistral plans to deploy thousands of NVIDIA's Vera Rubin Superchips to enhance GPU capacity, supporting Microsoft's cloud and AI services. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.

Editor's Note

The advancements in AI upscaling technologies like NVIDIA's DLSS 5 highlight the ongoing evolution in graphics rendering, which is crucial for industries relying on high-quality visual outputs. As companies like Microsoft and Mistral enhance AI capabilities in Europe, the competitive landscape for AI infrastructure and services is expected to intensify, impacting various sectors including gaming and enterprise applications.
