French shipbuilder Naval Group has revealed a new 8,000-ton drone carrier concept named SCX 26, designed to deploy various types of drones. This unveiling took place at the Euronaval defense show in Paris, emphasizing the need for innovative naval solutions in response to high-intensity conflicts and hybrid warfare. The carrier aims to serve as an operational hub for a hybrid fleet, capable of launching drones for diverse missions, including intelligence gathering and anti-submarine warfare.
The significance of the SCX 26 lies in its design, which incorporates lessons learned from recent conflicts and anticipates future technological advancements. With a length of 170 meters, a crew of 150, and a maximum speed of 30 knots, the carrier is poised to navigate over 8,000 nautical miles. Its advanced weaponry will include over 100 vertical launching system silos and an electromagnetic gun, enhancing its operational capabilities in modern naval warfare.
Naval Group's UCUV demonstrator project, aimed at developing an unmanned combat underwater vehicle for the French Navy, is also noteworthy. The first at-sea testing for this project is scheduled for 2028, marking a significant step in validating operational responses to emerging conflict scenarios.
