London defence prime formed 1999, building uncrewed systems incl. the Herne XLAUV, T-Series heavy-lift drones, PHASA-35 solar HAPS and Brontanax CCA.
BAE Systems plc is a British defence, aerospace and security company headquartered at Stirling Square, 6 Carlton Gardens, London. It was formed in 1999 through the merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. The company reports more than 100,000 employees in over 40 countries and an order backlog of GBP 84.0 billion at its 2026 half-year results. Its businesses are organised into Electronic Systems, Platforms & Services, Air, Maritime, and Cyber & Intelligence, covering air, land, sea, space and cyber.
Alongside crewed aircraft, ships, submarines and armoured vehicles, BAE Systems has an uncrewed and autonomous systems portfolio. In the air domain its portfolio includes Brontanax, described as the UK's first British-designed uncrewed autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft; the T-Series family of all-electric heavy-lift uncrewed aircraft for civil and military logistics, including the T-150 used in ship-to-ship resupply trials and the TRV-150 used to launch precision munitions in US trials; PHASA-35, an ultra-lightweight solar-powered High Altitude Pseudo Satellite for persistent communications; the Koios medium ISR UAS; the Fregata conventional take-off ISR platform; the Nyan deep-strike platform; and Capstone, developed with Certo Aerospace. The T-Series technology came from Malloy Aeronautics, a British heavy-lift drone developer that BAE Systems acquired in February 2024. The earlier Taranis unmanned combat air vehicle demonstrator is cited by the company as the programme that built its autonomy credentials.
In the maritime domain BAE Systems develops Herne, a modular Extra Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (XLAUV) for anti-submarine warfare, critical national infrastructure protection and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Herne uses insertable hull sections and large payload modules that can carry ROUVs, range extenders and sonars. It completed an in-water demonstration in the UK in 2024 with Cellula Robotics, with which BAE signed a 10-year strategic partnership in 2025; autonomy and command chain design are supported by Nautomate, and Lloyd's Register provides the certification framework under the Unmanned Marine Systems Code. The partners expect a market-ready craft by the end of 2026.
