On October 14, Microsoft announced its collaboration with the non-profit Health-ISAC to dismantle three crime support services involved in phishing scams. This initiative was prompted by information from Japan's National Police Agency regarding scams targeting the country. The services, including YAM Store, CoGUI, and Iron Man, facilitated the distribution of over 1 billion malicious messages since January 2026, with 750 million aimed at Microsoft customers.
The dismantling of these services is significant as they targeted consumers, healthcare institutions, and financial organizations across more than 150 countries, affecting over 75,000 entities. Microsoft reported that the operators of these services profited by tens of millions of dollars. The company has already invalidated over 20,000 accounts related to YAM Store and is actively blocking over 100,000 domains used for impersonation and fraud.
Looking ahead, Microsoft emphasizes that these services are part of a larger criminal network, and while this action does not dismantle the entire network, it complicates access to the accounts, tools, and infrastructure that criminals rely on. The investigation began in late 2025 following intelligence from the National Police Agency regarding malicious messages targeting Japanese users, with support from various organizations including Resecurity and Cloudflare.
