On October 28, 2026, Equinor inaugurated the Kårstø Marine Robotics Centre (KNARR), a facility aimed at the testing and development of marine robotic technologies. Located at the Kårstø processing plant in Tysvær, Norway, KNARR is set to be one of the world's first operational test centers for marine robotics, facilitating advancements in inspection, autonomous operations, and environmental monitoring.
The establishment of KNARR is significant as it supports the Norwegian continental shelf's role in ensuring a reliable oil and gas supply to Europe. Hege Skryseth, Equinor's executive vice president, emphasized the importance of technology in enhancing safety and efficiency in offshore operations. The center will collaborate with suppliers and research communities to develop innovative solutions that improve operational data management.
Equinor has allocated NOK 16 million for the center's establishment, with plans for future expansion. The facility includes three test areas at varying depths and aims to achieve substantial cost savings through the use of underwater robots and autonomous vessels, targeting a significant reduction in operational costs by 2035.
