Company Overview

Shape Process Automation (SPA) is a robotic systems integrator and automation equipment builder headquartered at 1255 Harmon Road, Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is a Shape Technologies Group company, sitting alongside Flow International, KMT Waterjet, H2O Jet, Advanced Pressure Systems, Aqua-Dyne, Aquarese, Shape Mined Materials and TOPS within that group.

The company in its present form dates from 3 December 2018, when Shape Technologies Group combined two of its businesses, Dynamic Robotic Solutions and Tech-Con Automation of Burlington, Ontario, under a single Shape Process Automation brand. The company traces its own heritage further back, to 1972 and the first waterjet machine delivered by AB BestMatic, and it has also grown by acquisition: Aquarese, a French ultra-high-pressure waterjet specialist, in 2017, and Evomatic AB of Karlshamn and Lidkoping, Sweden, announced on 1 June 2022. Evomatic brought roughly 90 employees and custom robotic automation for automotive, food, life science and general industry, including picking, packing and wrapping equipment; at the time of that deal the two businesses together stated they had deployed close to 4,000 robots in European factories.

SPA states more than 500 employees, over 12,000 system installations worldwide, more than 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space and an average integration output of about 400 robots a year. It operates from Auburn Hills, Michigan (120-plus staff); Burlington, Ontario (100-plus); Karlshamn and Lidkoping, Sweden (150-plus); Gimhae, South Korea (60-plus); Lille, France (35-plus); Hasslock, Germany; and Etain, France, with spare-parts support also listed for the United Kingdom.

Its technical focus is flexible automated material processing, meaning robot cells that cut, trim and handle parts rather than weld or assemble them. Core processes are robotic laser cutting, waterjet cutting, CNC routing and robotic machining, ultrasonic knife cutting and deflashing, and material handling and packaging. On the laser side it offers its own NEWTON laser technology alongside CO2 and fiber laser systems. Its packaged system families are designated EP100 for palletising, EP200 for high-speed delta-style pick-and-place cells, EP300 for integrated solutions and EP400 for flexible packaging. Surrounding services include application engineering, software programming, operator and maintenance training, OEM spare parts, and a Customer Solution Center used for process validation and development work before a system is committed.

Markets served are automotive, aerospace, consumer products, logistics and general industry, with food and life science added through the Evomatic side of the business. For a robotics supply chain SPA is a buyer and integrator of robot arms rather than a robot maker: it specifies and programmes third-party industrial robots inside cells it designs and builds, and its own intellectual property sits in the cutting heads, laser sources, tooling, cell architecture and process know-how. Its position is unusual among integrators in that its parent group also owns the ultra-high-pressure waterjet pump and cutting-head technology it integrates, which lets it supply both the process equipment and the automation around it from within one corporate group.
