Turkey's next-generation KAAN fighter, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), has reached a significant milestone as the P1 prototype commenced powered taxi tests. This phase is crucial for evaluating the aircraft's braking, steering, engine response, and ground handling, all necessary before its first flight.
The significance of this milestone is heightened as the P1 prototype closely mirrors the intended production configuration of the KAAN fighter. Following Turkey's removal from the F-35 program in 2019, the KAAN program was initiated to develop an indigenous replacement for Turkey's combat fleet, with the first prototype, P0, having completed its maiden flight earlier this year.
Looking ahead, TUSAŞ anticipates the KAAN P1 will make its maiden flight in the coming months. The company plans to introduce additional prototypes, including P2, to enhance testing capabilities and expedite the development timeline, with a goal of producing 148 aircraft in total, potentially including orders from Indonesia.
Editor's Note
The development of the KAAN fighter reflects Turkey's strategic shift towards indigenous defense capabilities following its exclusion from the F-35 program. This move not only emphasizes technological self-reliance but also positions Turkey as a competitive player in the global defense market. As TUSAŞ progresses with the KAAN program, the implications for regional defense dynamics and international partnerships will be significant.
