Billerica, Massachusetts battery developer founded 2019; builds FEST and Solstice solid-state cells under agreements with Stellantis and Hyundai.
Factorial Energy, incorporated as Factorial Inc., develops solid-state batteries for electric vehicles from its headquarters at 805 Middlesex Turnpike in Billerica, Massachusetts. The company was spun out in 2019 from battery research begun at Cornell University in 2013, and it emerged from stealth in 2021.
Its FEST platform pairs a lithium-metal anode with a quasi-solid polymer electrolyte and a high-capacity cathode, while the newer Solstice platform uses a sulfide-based, fully solid-state electrolyte. Factorial progressed from sub-0.2 amp-hour coin cells to a 40 amp-hour prototype in 2021, showed a 100-plus amp-hour cell at CES in 2023, and in 2024 shipped 106 amp-hour automotive B-samples to global automakers for testing; the chemistry is described as compatible with roughly 80 percent of existing lithium-ion production equipment. Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai Motor Group hold joint development agreements with Factorial, and Stellantis is fitting the cells into a demonstration fleet of Dodge Charger Daytona vehicles.
Factorial holds more than 150 patents and pending applications and maintains sales and supply-chain operations in Korea. Leadership includes founder and chief executive Siyu Huang, founder and chief technology officer Alex Yu, and executive chairman Joe Taylor. In 2026 the company added a partnership with Mitsui Kinzoku and an SK On memorandum of understanding.
