Pratt & Whitney, a Connecticut-based aerospace equipment manufacturer, has delivered its first GTF Advantage turbofan engine, which offers up to 8% more takeoff thrust and double the time on wing. This engine has entered service on an Airbus A321XLR for United Airlines, enhancing the efficiency of the A320neo family.
The introduction of the GTF Advantage engine is significant as it provides greater durability and longer-range capabilities, allowing the Airbus A321XLR to fly up to 5,400 miles. This advancement is expected to improve operational efficiency and reliability for airlines, particularly for United Airlines, which is the first to operate this engine.
Looking ahead, Pratt & Whitney plans to transition its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the GTF Advantage specification by 2028. Additionally, existing GTF engine operators will have access to durability improvements through the GTF Hot Section Plus upgrade, available early next year. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
Editor's Note
