Company Overview

Volocopter GmbH is a German electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer and pioneer of urban air mobility (UAM), founded in 2011 and headquartered in Bruchsal, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Strasse 2-6, 76646 Bruchsal). The company was the first to build and fly an all-electric crewed multicopter prototype in 2011. As of the company page, Volocopter employs more than 180 people from over 60 nationalities.

Key aircraft products: The VoloCity is a 2-seat all-electric air taxi with 18 rotors powered by 9 swappable battery packs, designed for urban short-haul routes between transportation hubs (train stations, airports). The VoloCity is 4x quieter than a comparable helicopter and inaudible at 120-meter distance in urban settings. The VoloCity has completed over 2,000 test flights globally including crewed flights in Hamburg, Dubai, Helsinki, and Singapore. Technical specifications include: 2 seats (1 pilot + 1 passenger, path to autonomous operation), 18 rotors with 18 electric motors, 9 swappable battery packs, dual redundancy on rotors/motors/batteries/avionics, zero in-flight CO2/NOx emissions.

The VoloRegion is a longer-range, 4-seat eVTOL connecting cities with suburbs. The VoloIQ is the AI-powered urban air mobility ecosystem management platform running on Microsoft Azure, used for fleet management and urban integration. In 2026, Volocopter launched the VoloXPro, an electrically powered ultralight multicopter for air sports and professional passenger transport.

Key milestones: 2011 first all-electric crewed multicopter prototype; 2017 first autonomous air taxi flight over Dubai; 2019 EASA Design Organisation Approval (DOA) and first VoloPort prototype unveiled and crewed flight over Singapore's Marina Bay; 2021 EASA Production Organisation Approval and first public VoloDrone flight; 2022 vertiport testbed inaugurated in Paris. EASA Type Certification (TC) is being actively pursued.

The company is owned by Diamond Aircraft Industries (Wanfeng Group), with Bin Chen as Chairman and Liqun (Frank) Zhang as CEO and David Bausek as CTO. The company targets allied governments, defence organizations, city governments, and critical infrastructure operators for its UAM solutions.
