TSA Invites Drone Industry to Discuss Security Standards for Part 108 BVLOS Operations

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is engaging the drone industry to gather input on security requirements for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations. This initiative follows the FAA's proposed Part 108 framework, which aims to streamline BVLOS operations without the need for individual waivers. The TSA's notice, published on September 4, emphasizes the importance of establishing security protocols as routine BVLOS operations become more common.

As the drone industry transitions to routine BVLOS operations, compliance with security requirements will be crucial. TSA is particularly interested in feedback from companies already conducting BVLOS operations under FAA waivers, as well as those planning to operate under the final rule. The deadline for participation requests in the upcoming technical roundtables is October 19, 2026, highlighting the urgency for industry input on these critical security measures.

Looking ahead, the TSA aims to finalize security requirements in collaboration with the FAA, focusing on vetting personnel and the establishment of TSA-approved security programs. Participants in the roundtables will discuss existing measures for securing BVLOS operations, which will help shape the future of UAS security standards in the industry.

Editor's Note

The TSA's initiative to involve the drone industry in shaping security requirements for BVLOS operations reflects a growing recognition of the need for robust compliance frameworks. As regulatory pathways evolve, companies must stay informed and engaged to navigate the complexities of security and safety in unmanned aircraft systems. This collaboration could significantly impact operational standards and competitive dynamics within the drone sector.
