Einride and Lidl have initiated daily operations of a cab-less SAE Level 4 autonomous truck on public roads in Germany, transporting goods between a Lidl distribution center and store. This deployment marks the first of its kind in Germany, authorized by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, transitioning from a limited demonstration to regular logistics use.
The significance of this operation lies in Lidl's exploration of autonomous freight solutions to enhance its logistics network while addressing ongoing driver shortages. The project aims to integrate autonomous trucks into Lidl's supply chain, with plans for a multi-stop milkrun model and potential expansions across other companies within the Schwarz Group.
Looking ahead, Einride and Lidl will evaluate the technology's effectiveness in real-world conditions to determine its role in site logistics. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
