Ulysses Ecosystem Engineering Inc. is a marine robotics and environmental technology company co-founded in 2023 by Akhil Voorakkara (CEO), Colm O'Brien, Jamie Wedderburn, and Will O'Brien. The company originally emerged from Trinity College Dublin and established its first office in Dublin, Ireland. It is now headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area with operations in Ireland and Australia.
The company's mission is to halt and reverse the devastating loss of seagrass meadows, which are declining at approximately 7% per year globally due to climate change, coastal development, and water quality degradation. Seagrass ecosystems are among the most effective natural carbon sinks on Earth and provide critical habitat for marine biodiversity.
Ulysses has developed a fleet of autonomous, AI-driven underwater robots capable of mapping, monitoring, and restoring seagrass meadows at kilometer scale. The robots collect seagrass seeds from healthy donor meadows, process them, and replant them in degraded coastal areas at depths of up to 300 meters. The platform's autonomous seed-distribution capability makes restoration projects approximately 100 times larger and faster than conventional hand-planting methods while reducing per-hectare cost by a factor of 10.
The core platform encompasses three operational modes: seed collection, precision planting, and post-planting monitoring with growth tracking via AI-based image analysis. Ulysses has partnered with The Nature Conservancy and government agencies in Florida and Australia, including projects associated with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
In November 2024, Ulysses Ecosystem Engineering raised $2 million in a pre-seed round led by Lowercarbon Capital. In April 2026, the company raised $38 million in a Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Booz Allen Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, ReGen Ventures, Superorganism, and Harpoon Ventures — validating the platform's potential for large-scale environmental restoration and carbon credit generation.
