Company Overview

OffWorld, Inc. is a robotics company headquartered in Pasadena, California, that builds modular, AI-controlled robots for mining and other extreme, unstructured environments on Earth, with the longer-term aim of applying the same systems to resource extraction on the Moon. The company was founded in 2016; Jim Keravala is CEO and Chief Architect. OffWorld operates subsidiaries in South Africa (OffWorld Africa (Pty) Ltd.), Australia (OffWorld Australia, Ltd.) and Europe (OffWorld Europe, SARL), and states that it holds ISO 9001:2015 certification.

OffWorld's approach is to deploy squads of smaller, fully electric robots that work together and run around the clock. Its product line includes: Surveyor, a rugged autonomous robot for mapping and surveying in steep terrain with a payload bay for ground-contact or low-clearance sensors; Excavator, which maps rock faces before and during digging for selective ore extraction that limits waste rock; Collector, which picks up, stows and sorts fragmented material into designated heaps; Hauler, which transports fragmented material with autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance and can tow another robot; Dozer, which pushes soil, sand, snow, rubble and rock with a customisable front blade; and Micro Fractor, a containerised unit that uses high-intensity microwaves to crack broken rock and expose minerals before processing, adapted from applicator technology first designed for a mobile microwave preconditioning robot. The Excavator, Collector, Hauler and Dozer share sensor data and can learn behaviours from human operators and from other robots.

OffWorld lists Anglo American, BHP, Ma'aden, the US National Science Foundation, NASA, the Luxembourg Space Agency, the US Space Force and the US Air Force among its customers and partners. In January 2023 it signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi miner Ma'aden at the Future Minerals Forum in Riyadh covering the first deployment of industrial mining robots in Ma'aden's mines. Beyond mining, the company targets construction, utilities, infrastructure, public safety and space applications.
