Swiss EPFL spinout (2021, Renens) making the Skywalk lower-limb exoskeleton system for neurological gait rehabilitation in clinics and at home.
Autonomyo is a Swiss medical technology startup founded in 2021 and based in Renens, Vaud, near Lausanne. The company was spun out of the EPFL Biorobotics Laboratory (BioRob) and was co-founded by Fabian Bischof and Dr. Amalric Ortlieb. Autonomyo develops a lower-limb exoskeleton and connected digital therapy platform aimed at people with neurological gait disorders, including stroke survivors, individuals with multiple sclerosis, and patients with neuromuscular diseases.
The company's flagship product system is called Skywalk, which integrates three components: a safety support frame that prevents falls, a smart wearable exoskeleton for the lower limbs, and a digital therapy platform with remote monitoring capabilities for clinical and home use. The exoskeleton provides three actuated degrees of freedom per leg, covering hip adduction/abduction, hip flexion/extension, and knee flexion/extension. The device weighs approximately 25 kg and is fastened to the user via orthopedic interfaces at the trunk, shanks, and feet.
Two patents have been filed, one in the US and one in Europe. Autonomyo is distinguished as one of the first companies to enable robotically-assisted gait training both in rehabilitation clinics and in the home setting, with remote physician monitoring. The project was initiated in collaboration with ASRIMM, the Swiss association against neuromuscular diseases, and has been supported by the Swiss Foundation for Research on Neuromuscular Diseases (FSRMM) and the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Autonomyo raised €1.4 million from private and public investors in 2024 and launched a crowdfunding campaign on Capital Cell to fund international expansion. The company is pursuing CE marking and FDA readiness. Drive components for the exoskeleton are supplied by FAULHABER micro motors.
