Drones and Federal Resources Combat New World Screwworm in Texas
Drones and federal border surveillance resources are being deployed in Texas to combat the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that inflicts severe damage on warm-blooded animals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has conducted over 1,000 drone surveillance flights since June 3, 2026, observing more than 20,000 animals as part of a wildlife surveillance initiative in collaboration with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This initiative is crucial as New World screwworm infestations can devastate livestock, posing a significant threat to the agricultural sector. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) utilizes drones equipped with advanced technology to identify animals that may require veterinary inspection, thereby enhancing the response to this agricultural threat. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is also involved, providing support for surveillance and training personnel to effectively respond to screwworm cases.
