Microsoft reported on August 28, 2026, the emergence of 'TerminalFix', a new variant of the ClickFix attack campaign. This method manipulates users into executing commands that lead to malware infections, but with a significant change in the target destination, shifting from the 'Run' dialog to Windows Terminal or PowerShell.
The importance of TerminalFix lies in its ability to facilitate multi-stage intrusions rather than just single malware distribution. By altering the execution environment, attackers can execute complex scripts, making it easier to infiltrate organizational networks. Microsoft warns that this method can turn an infected PC into a relay point for attackers to access internal systems.
Looking ahead, Microsoft has not disclosed any further timeline for the evolution of TerminalFix. However, they emphasize the need for organizations to implement security measures, such as restricting PowerShell execution and educating users about the risks associated with fake CAPTCHA prompts that encourage command execution.
