Company Overview

"Olis Robotics is a Seattle software company that sells video-based diagnostics for factory automation, positioning itself around a single promise: the fastest way to fix an automation problem. It was founded in 2013 as a spinout of the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory, building on telerobotics research carried out with the US Navy and NASA, and works from 240 2nd Ave S, Suite 201-B in the Pioneer Square district.

The product answers a specific objection from plant IT departments. Olis runs entirely at the edge, with no cloud service and no VPN required, so a controls engineer can reach a stalled cell without opening the factory network. Two packages are offered. The Olis App runs on Android phones and tablets, connects directly to a PLC or robot controller without additional hardware, is advertised at a five-minute setup, and is priced at USD 499 per year. Olis IPC Software runs on Windows and Linux industrial PCs for permanent installation on a line. Both record real-time video alongside PLC signals and controller logs and place them on one synchronised event timeline, so an engineer can see what the machine was doing at the moment it faulted rather than reconstructing it from an error code. Beyond diagnosis, the software provides SSH terminal access, remote teach-pendant operation and code editing, which lets a fault be corrected as well as identified from off site.

The company has also opened the diagnostic stream to AI agents, supporting Claude, GPT and customer-built agents against the combined video, signal and log record. Supported hardware covers Allen-Bradley PLCs and robots from FANUC, Kawasaki, Universal Robots and Yaskawa, with ABB announced as coming; Olis states this reaches more than half of the global installed base of industrial robots. Kawasaki Robotics has worked with the company on remote monitoring and recovery. A named reference is the chief controls engineer at Pearson Packaging, who describes getting more information faster than previously possible.

Buyers are system integrators and manufacturers running distributed plants, where the cost of a fault is largely the travel and waiting time before anyone qualified reaches the machine. Olis also runs Olis 100, a recognition programme for integrators that deploy its diagnostics rather than a product line. Earlier generations of the platform centred on an edge-hosted industrial PC and the Olis Connect device driving a browser interface; the current line has moved the same capability onto a phone app and standard industrial PCs, lowering the hardware barrier to a first deployment."
