"We are dreamers, we are manufacturers, we are makers: let's start with 3D printing to save the world."
Italian maker of Crane WASP modular earth and concrete house printers plus Delta WASP clay and pellet printers, self-financed from printer sales.
WASP S.r.l. is an Italian company that designs and manufactures 3D printers in Massa Lombarda, in the province of Ravenna. Led by founder and CEO Massimo Moretti, it builds machines for filaments, plastic pellets, clay and cement, serving makers, industry, ceramics and construction. The company states that its projects are 100% self-financed from printer sales. It presents itself with the motto "We are dreamers, we are manufacturers, we are makers: let's start with 3D printing to save the world."
WASP began with the PowerWASP, a printer that could also mill wood and aluminium and print ceramic mixtures through a syringe, and went on to the Delta WASP range of delta-kinematic printers with its LDM extruder for ceramics. Construction printing followed: in 2015, after about three years of research, WASP built BigDelta, a 12 m high printer for building homes. In 2016 it released the Maker Economy Starter Kit, an architectural-scale printing system packed in a single container. In 2018 it introduced Crane WASP, a modular, collaborative printing system for houses. WASP has used it on projects such as GAIA, the first 3D-printed house made with earth, and Itaca, a self-sufficient, eco-sustainable printed house. It also printed a concept store with Dior.
Crane WASP has a print volume of 8.2 m diameter by 3.2 m height from a 5.2 m column and a 4.3 m arm. The machine weighs 700 kg and draws under 1.5 kW on a 220/240 V supply. It uses 25, 30 or 38 mm nozzles and 12 to 20 mm layers at up to 200 mm/s, and prints clay, lime or cement binders with 0-5 mm aggregates and 0-30 mm fibres. A basic module covers a usable printing area of 50 m2, and several cranes can print the same building at once. A crew of three can make it operational in about two hours without cranes or forklifts. The package includes the LDM XXL twin-screw extruder and a multi-material pump with an 80 L hopper, a 15 m hose and 250 L/h maximum flow. Prices start at EUR 160,000. The Stand-Alone Crane WASP is a cheaper, more compact version with a 6.2 m diameter by 1.7 m print area. For smaller elements, the WASP 3MT LDM Concrete prints mortars, concrete and fibre-filled mixes up to 3 mm aggregate in a roughly 1 m diameter by 1 m tall volume at up to 200 mm/s.
Outside construction, WASP sells industrial pellet printers (POWER WASP 45 HDP, WASP 3MT HDP, WASP 60100 HDP, WASP 4070 HDP, WASP CUBO HDP), the WASP 4070 ZX and FX, the Delta WASP 2040 Clay and 2040 PRO, the WASP 40100 LDM and 3MT LDM Clay for ceramics. Its range also includes a WASP Robotic Arm System, the CEREBRO control system, HDP, LHDP and LDM extruders, a continuous feeding system and the RIGENERA 3D recycling unit. Recent work covers geopolymer printing, 3D-printed ceramic brick walls, sailing moulds, drone parts with Italdron, wellness products with Technogym and a ceramic installation for London's Natural History Museum.
