Colchester, UK university robotics group formally established in 2020; its GBP3 million lab houses more than 50 ground, aerial, and humanoid robots.
The Robotics and Embedded Systems research group sits within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex in Colchester, England. Formally established in 2020, though robotics research at Essex dates to the 1990s, the group is led by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier.
The group's Robotics Laboratory represents an investment of more than GBP 3 million and houses over 50 robotic systems, including wheeled, flying, humanoid, and wheelchair platforms. Its Embedded and Intelligent Systems Laboratory, created in 2005 after relocating from the University of Kent, and an iSpace IoT testbed built with GBP 240,000 of investment support further work on ground, underwater, and airborne robotics, autonomous decision-making, and System-on-Chip design, with agricultural, assistive, and social-care robotics and human-rights monitoring by computer vision among the applied programs.
The group's National Centre for Nuclear Robotics work, funded by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, involves NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, BAE Systems, Kuka, Toshiba, and Rolls-Royce, with more than GBP 10 million in in-kind industrial support. A computer-vision system built by the group for detecting human rights violations has been used by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and a 2020 spin-out, UltraSoC Technologies, raised GBP 20 million before its acquisition by Siemens.
