EVENT OVERVIEW

The International Symposium on Medical Robotics (ISMR) will hold its 2027 edition at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, from April 27 to 29, 2027, preceded by a Spring School on April 26. Organized from Georgia Tech, with Jaydev P. Desai as general chair, and technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, ISMR is a single-track research meeting whose papers are published in IEEE Xplore. The program chairs for 2027 are Mahdi Tavakoli (University of Alberta) and Iulian Iordachita (Johns Hopkins University), and Vanderbilt's Xiaoguang Dong serves as publication chair.

The symposium covers surgical robotics, image-guided interventions, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, and prosthetics, along with emerging work in soft robotics, smart materials and artificial intelligence. The first day is devoted to workshops and tutorials, followed by two days of oral and poster presentations. ISMR has moved around in recent years: the 2025 edition ran at Georgia Tech in Atlanta alongside ICRA 2025, and the 2026 edition was held at the University of Tennessee Conference Center in Knoxville in April 2026. Paper submissions for 2027 close on November 10, 2026, with decisions due by December 25, 2026 and an early-bird registration deadline of March 15, 2027.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Workshops and tutorials on April 27, single-track oral and poster presentations April 28-29

  • Spring School on medical robotics on April 26

  • Topics span surgical robotics, image-guided interventions, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, and prosthetics

  • Emerging areas include soft robotics, smart materials and AI for medical robots

  • Late-breaking research poster track (offered in prior editions)

RECOMMENDED ATTENDEES

Academic researchers and graduate students in surgical, interventional and rehabilitation robotics; clinicians and surgeons involved in device research; R&D engineers at surgical robot, catheter, endoscopy and prosthetics companies; medical-device start-up founders looking for research partners and talent; and funding-agency and investor staff tracking early-stage medical robotics work. The Spring School suits students and early-career researchers entering the field.
