Company Overview

The State Key Laboratory of Robotics and System is a national-level robotics research laboratory at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. It grew out of HIT's Robotics Institute, founded in 1986 as one of China's earliest robotics research centres. Construction of the state key laboratory began in 2007 and passed acceptance in July 2010; it was rated "good" in its first national evaluation in 2013 and "excellent" in the second in 2018, and in 2022 it was reorganised under the new national key laboratory system as the State Key Laboratory of Robotics Technology and Systems.

The laboratory draws on HIT's disciplines in mechanical engineering and control science and engineering (both rated A+ and Double First-Class), computer science and technology (A) and electrical engineering (A-). It conducts strategic, frontier and original basic research serving aerospace, national defence and economic development. Research is organised in four directions: robot design methods and common key technologies; intelligent perception and behaviour control; human-robot interaction and coexistence; and novel robot system integration.

According to the laboratory, its robotics results have been applied in China's crewed spaceflight and lunar exploration programmes, deep-space exploration and on-orbit servicing. Recent work reported by the lab also extends to medical micro- and nanorobotics, including a microrobot system based on engineered dendritic cells for tumour immunotherapy (Prof. Li Tianlong's team) and an adaptive nanorobot swarm platform for treating central nervous system injury (Prof. Wu Zhiguang's joint team).

The laboratory is located in the Science Park Technology Innovation Building of HIT at No. 2 Yikuang Street, Xiangfang District, Harbin.
