The Neurorobotics Platform (NRP) is an open simulation environment connecting spiking neural network brain models to simulated robots for embodied AI research.
Neurorobotics Platform (NRP), is a robotics and neuroscience simulation environment developed under the European Union-funded Human Brain Project, not to a standalone United Kingdom company; the directory record's name, NeuroRobotics Ltd., and its listed country and city do not match what the site describes. Development of the NRP began in 2013 through a consortium of European research institutes, including Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), the TUM-affiliated institute Fortiss, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and the University of Granada, and the platform has no single corporate headquarters.
The NRP lets researchers connect spiking neural network brain models to simulated robots for closed-loop, embodied AI experiments. It runs on high-performance computing clusters with cloud-hosted and local installation options and integrates with EBRAINS neuroscience tooling, pairing robot models with neural network controllers for reproducible neurorobotics experiments.
Funding has come from EU FP7 grant 604102 and Horizon 2020 grant 945539 (HBP SGA3). TUM's Chair of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Real-Time Systems, led by Alois Knoll, is a central contributor, alongside SSSA's BioRobotics Institute and the University of Granada's Neurorobotics Lab.
