Company Overview

Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, headquartered at Higashiueno 2-chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo, and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under code 6305. It was established on 1 October 1970 as a spin-off from Hitachi, Ltd.; Hitachi reduced its holding in 2022 by selling a 26% stake to ITOCHU-backed investors, and the company operates as an independently listed group. Its range covers hydraulic excavators from mini machines to ultra-large mining excavators, rigid dump trucks, wheel loaders, compaction and recycling machines, with subsidiaries across Japan, Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania, including Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing in Canada and Wenco International Mining Systems, a fleet-management software company. In October 2025 it announced that it will transform and rebrand as LANDCROS in April 2027, saying it wants to go beyond machinery to connected and sustainable solutions.

Autonomy and remote operation are a growing part of the business. Its Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) for mines combines autonomous haul trucks with manned instrumented trucks and uses Wenco's Fleet Management System. The company highlights mixed-fleet operation alongside manned trucks during the transition to autonomy, resilience to transient communication drop-outs, an open-autonomy approach with interoperable FMS/AHS interfaces, functional safety aligned with ISO standards over a dedicated safety network, lease-to-buy commercial options and a technological centre of excellence for 24/7 remote monitoring. One integrated site it describes runs 28 autonomous trucks with 22 manned instrumented trucks and 41 manned instrumented light vehicles, and the system's track record is given as more than 144,000 working hours with zero lost-time injuries, 1.66 million km travelled and over 58 million tonnes moved.

Its Unmanned Excavator System (UES) programme develops remote control and operation-support functions for ultra-large excavators. An EX2500-6 was operated remotely from a screen at Makuhari Messe in Chiba while working at a test site in Urahoro, Hokkaido, about 870 km away, and operation-support functions were verified at a Rio Tinto mine in Australia: Digging Assist, which adjusts control according to cylinder load and front-attachment movement, and Loading Assist, which raises the front automatically while loading trucks so the operator mainly controls the swing.

For general construction the company offers ICT construction under its Solution Linkage concept, covering work from initial surveys to as-built data delivery, with sales and rental of machines, equipment and software. Its ICT hydraulic excavator ZX200X-7 provides machine control so that operators of any skill level can work to high accuracy, and ConSite provides remote machine monitoring. At bauma 2025 the European arm showed the LANDCROS One concept excavator, with a modular cab, AI-assisted interfaces and the ability to switch between self-driving, remote-controlled and manual operation, alongside a human-detection assist system, 2D/3D operator assist and LANDCROS Connect, a fleet-management system for mixed-brand fleets.
