"Construction. Automated."
Danish maker of construction 3D printers - BOD2, BOD3 and BOD XL - with 90+ systems in 35+ countries and GE, CEMEX, Holcim and PERI as shareholders.
COBOD International A/S is a Danish manufacturer of construction 3D printers, based in Copenhagen. The name stands for Construction Of Buildings On Demand, and the company describes its mission as building smarter through multifunctional construction robots based on 3D printing. It was founded by Henrik Lund-Nielsen, previously founder and chief executive of 3D Printhuset, the business that printed the BOD, Europe's first 3D-printed building, in Copenhagen in 2017.
Unlike companies that print buildings as a service, COBOD sells the machines. Its line has three members: BOD2, a modular gantry printer aimed at single large buildings, which the company has claimed can reach 100 cm per second; BOD3, aimed at high-volume repeat production; and BOD XL, which it calls the world's largest construction robot. Alongside the printers it supplies software, service and materials guidance. A deliberate part of its pitch is that customers can use locally sourced concrete rather than a proprietary dry mix, unlike vendors that tie the printer to their own material. It reports more than 90 systems installed across more than 35 countries, and claims roughly 30 per cent lower project cost, 50 per cent faster delivery and two to three times less waste and carbon dioxide.
Its shareholder register is unusual for a company this size: General Electric, CEMEX, Holcim and the German formwork group PERI all hold stakes, PERI having taken a minority share in 2018. Holcim has collaborated with COBOD since 2019 and supplies the TectorPrint printing ink. The company states more than 100 staff of 25 nationalities.
Markets served are housing, coastal and marine, and infrastructure and civil works. For a robotics supply chain COBOD is the equipment vendor rather than the contractor: a builder buys a BOD printer and prints with its own crews and concrete.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Construction 3D printer aimed at high-volume repeat production rather than one-off buildings.
Largest printer in the range, marketed for large-footprint and multi-storey structures.
Printer control software plus commissioning, service and materials guidance sold with the machines.
