TUM chair in Garching led by Prof. Daniel Rixen that designs and builds the LOLA biped humanoid in-house and researches real-time walking control.
The Chair of Applied Mechanics (Lehrstuhl fuer Angewandte Mechanik) is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the TUM School of Engineering and Design at the Technical University of Munich, located on the Garching research campus. The chair is headed by Prof. dr.ir. Daniel Rixen and describes its focus as numerical methods, experimental dynamics and robotics.
Its flagship robotics project is LOLA, a full-size biped humanoid that the chair describes as fully designed and produced in-house. LOLA's lightweight hardware and modular software are intended to let it walk in cluttered and dynamic environments rather than only in predefined laboratory setups, and the chair develops real-time planning and control methods for stable walking on the robot. Published papers from the TUM team (Lohmeier, Buschmann, Ulbrich and colleagues, 2006-2009) describe LOLA as roughly 180 cm tall with 25 actuated degrees of freedom.
Methods developed on LOLA are transferred to other platforms. The chair's robotics group works on compensating inaccuracies of industrial robots, a bin-picking application with a collaborative robot, and safety and efficiency of future robotic coworkers. A biomechanics line studies human gait to improve LOLA's walking and develops simulation and test concepts for prosthesis design. The chair also maintains a public code library with generic implementations for robot kinematics, trajectory interpolation and logging, and publishes in scientific journals and conferences.
