Bengaluru drone maker and Jio Platforms subsidiary offering DGCA type-certified mapping, inspection and ISR drones plus drone-as-a-service.
Asteria Aerospace Limited is an Indian full-stack drone technology company that focuses on turning aerial data into actionable intelligence. It designs customized drone solutions for government and enterprise customers and keeps hardware design, software development and manufacturing in-house. The company was founded in Bengaluru in 2011 by Nihar Vartak and Neel Mehta. Reliance acquired the company in 2019 as part of its emerging-technologies push, and Jio Platforms held 74% of Asteria as of March 2024.
The current drone line covers four weight classes. A micro-category drone for surveying and mapping offers 35 minutes of flight time, up to 2 km line-of-sight range and an all-up weight under 2 kg. A small-category drone for surveillance, inspection and mapping offers 40 minutes and up to 2 km range under 3 kg. A mid-range drone for surveillance and industrial inspection with interchangeable payload options offers 60 minutes and up to 4 km range under 7 kg. A VTOL drone for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions offers up to 120 minutes of endurance at sea level and up to 20 km line-of-sight range under 10 kg. The micro, small and mid-range platforms are described as DGCA type certified, and the company says it was the first Indian drone manufacturer to receive three type certifications from the aviation regulator. Customer testimonials refer to its A400 and A410 UAV systems, and its indigenous AT-15 drone was showcased at India's 77th Republic Day Parade.
Asteria also offers Drone-as-a-Service (DaaS), under which customers obtain drone operations, data capture and analytics without buying hardware or software. Its services combine drone-captured geospatial imagery with AI-based visualization for data collection and analysis in sectors including agriculture, construction, telecom and oil and gas. The company reports more than 400 drones deployed.
Customers include Reliance Industries, the Indian Army, Kerala Police, Kolkata Police, Madhya Pradesh Police, Delhi Fire Service and Survey of India. Testimonials come from the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India, Pipeline Infrastructure Limited, the Karnataka Forest Department and Ambuja Neotia Group. Reliance BP Mobility used Asteria drones to analyze road traffic and vehicle speeds when selecting retail outlet sites. Revenue grew from INR 11 million in fiscal 2020 to INR 400 million in fiscal 2024.
