Océalia Invests in Cyclair to Enhance Autonomous Weeding Technology

French agricultural cooperative Océalia has acquired a minority stake in Cyclair, a startup focused on autonomous weeding robots, as part of its Cap 2030 strategic plan. This investment aims to provide Océalia's members in Nouvelle-Aquitaine with a mechanical weeding alternative to chemical herbicides.

The Cyclair robots, currently operational in Western and Central Europe, North America, and Australia, are designed to cover crops such as maize, sunflower, and rapeseed, with plans to expand into cereals and specialty crops. The technology employs cameras and LIDAR for navigation and weed identification, eliminating the need for GPS.

Looking ahead, Cyclair is developing additional features, including an electric weeding module and agronomic sensors, to enhance its platform's capabilities. The cooperative's focus on reducing herbicide use aligns with its sustainability framework, aiming for cost parity with traditional chemical weeding methods, which range from €35 to €85 per hectare.

Editor's Note

The investment by Océalia in Cyclair highlights a growing trend in the agricultural sector towards sustainable practices through technology adoption. As cooperatives seek to balance profitability with environmental responsibility, innovations in mechanical weeding could play a crucial role in shaping future farming practices. The emphasis on cost competitiveness will be vital for widespread adoption among farmers.
