The European Space Agency (ESA) has partnered with The Pokémon Company International (TPCI) to celebrate World Space Week 2026. As part of this collaboration, a Pikachu toy spent 67 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), completing 1,040 orbits around Earth alongside seven astronauts, including ESA's Sophie Adenot.
This initiative aims to inspire curiosity about space among younger generations, aligning with ESA's mission to engage the public in space exploration. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher emphasized the importance of this partnership in creating unique experiences that connect people with space.
Looking ahead, the collaboration will feature exhibitions and interactive programs at ESA sites and major museums in Europe, along with exclusive merchandise. A Pokémon GO in-game event will also run from October 4, 2026, to April 30, 2027, allowing players to engage with space-themed gameplay, including encounters with Astronaut Pikachu.
Editor's Note
The partnership between ESA and TPCI reflects a growing trend in the space sector to leverage popular culture for educational outreach. By integrating elements of gaming and entertainment, organizations can enhance public engagement and interest in space exploration, potentially influencing future generations of scientists and engineers.
