Company Overview

Wearable Robotics Srl is an Italian medical robotics company founded in 2014 as a spinout of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, one of Europe's leading research institutions in wearable and rehabilitation robotics. The company develops robotic exoskeletons and wearable rehabilitation devices focused on neuromotor recovery, movement assistance, and human motor augmentation, drawing directly on the university's Wearable Robotics Laboratory and WeReHab Lab, which pioneered tendon-actuated transmission technologies for lightweight, high-transparency exoskeletal systems. Since founding, the company has grown its clinical footprint to more than 20 countries through partnerships with leading European university hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

The company's flagship product is the ALEx RS, a bilateral upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton with five degrees of freedom — four active and one passive — designed to support motor recovery in post-stroke patients. ALEx RS uses an innovative tendon-actuated transmission to minimize device weight and maximize wearability and transparency during therapy sessions, and it is integrated with a virtual reality system to support simultaneous cognitive and physical rehabilitation; the device covers more than 92% of the workspace achievable by a healthy individual in bilateral arm movements. The ALEx RS holds a Class IIa CE medical device certification, and the first multicenter clinical trial for the device was launched in 2016 in collaboration with EPFL, the University Hospital of Geneva, and the University Hospital of Pisa.

More than 50 ALEx RS units have been deployed in clinical hospitals and rehabilitation centers across 20 countries as of 2026. In April 2026, the company closed a €5 million Series A funding round led by CDP Venture Capital, with participation from MITO Technology, LIFTT, SIMEST, RoboIT, and Toscana Next, to accelerate international expansion into North America and other global markets. The round reflects growing clinical demand and investor interest in robotic-assisted neuromotor rehabilitation as an evidence-based therapeutic modality.
