The Centre for Automation and Robotic Engineering Science (CARES) is a robotics research centre within the University of Auckland's Faculty of Engineering, based in Auckland, New Zealand, and directed by Professor Bruce MacDonald.
CARES organizes its research around four themes: Interact, covering human-robot interaction outcomes; Sense, covering environmental perception by automated systems; Plan, covering decision-making and task control for autonomous systems; and Act, covering mechanism design for dynamic and unstructured environments. The centre draws on electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, software engineering, and computer science alongside healthcare disciplines including nursing, gerontology, and health psychology, and has produced applied projects such as kiwifruit and apple harvesting and pollination robots for agriculture, dementia and elder-care assistive robots, autonomous delivery systems, robotic hand development, and rehabilitation sensors and virtual-reality training tools for healthcare.
CARES works with UniServices, the University of Auckland's commercialization arm, to move research toward industry application, and collaborates with Associate Professor Marama Muru-Lanning and the James Henare Maori Research Centre to incorporate kaupapa Maori perspectives into its research as part of the centre's Te Tiriti commitment.
