Company Overview

SCHUNK SE & Co. KG is a German family-owned manufacturer of gripping systems and clamping technology, headquartered in Lauffen am Neckar, Baden-Württemberg, since its founding in 1945. Friedrich Schunk established the company after World War II in a converted garage using a single used lathe. His son Heinz-Dieter Schunk grew the business into a global automation leader; today the company is led by the third generation — Henrik A. Schunk and Kristina I. Schunk. SCHUNK employs approximately 3,700 people across 34 directly owned subsidiaries and sales partners in more than 50 countries, generating revenues of over EUR 500 million annually.

SCHUNK is best known for two technology pillars: gripping and automation systems, and clamping and toolholding technology. The company introduced its first standardized robotic gripper in 1982 and its hydraulic expansion toolholder in 1978, and now offers more than 11,000 standard components.

In gripping and automation, the flagship product is the PGN-plus parallel gripper — a two-finger pneumatic gripper with multi-tooth guidance and permanent lubrication, available in more than 30 sizes and widely regarded as the world's most-copied gripper design. The EGL and EGN servo-electric gripper lines provide sensitive gripping force control for precision and collaborative applications. The EGU and EGL-C grippers are optimized for collaborative robots, with the EGL-C delivering 450 N gripping force and 42.5 mm stroke per finger. The SVH is a nine-drive, five-finger servo-electric robotic hand that replicates human hand dexterity for research and dexterous manipulation applications. Rotary modules, linear modules, and robot quick-change systems complete the automation portfolio.

In clamping and toolholding, the TENDO line of hydraulic expansion toolholders — compatible with 29 machine tool spindle interfaces including HSK-A 63, SK 40, BT 30/40, CAT 40, and SCHUNK CAPTO C6 — delivers sub-micron runout accuracy for precision and heavy-duty cutting. The TRIBOS polygonal toolholder system provides repeat accuracy below 0.003 mm and improves tool life by up to four times. The VERO-S zero-point quick-change pallet system offers hold forces up to 75,000 N and repeat accuracy below 0.005 mm, reducing machine setup times by up to 90 percent.

SCHUNK holds certifications including ISO 9001:2015, EN 9100 for aerospace quality management, IATF 16949 for automotive quality, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and CE marking across its product lines. Industries served include automotive, aerospace, electronics, life sciences, and general industrial manufacturing.
