Petra, founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, developed a semi-autonomous tunnel-boring robot called Swifty—the first practical and affordable solution for boring utility tunnels through hard-rock geologies previously considered impenetrable. Co-founded by CEO Kim Abrams and CPO Shivani Torres, the company targeted the undergrounding of critical utilities such as power lines and telecommunications infrastructure to reduce vulnerability to natural disasters. Petra demonstrated its technology by completing a bore through Sioux quartzite bedrock and raised over $49M in total venture capital, including a $33M Series A led by DCVC.
