Company Overview

Qingdao Pengpai Ocean Exploration Technology Co., Ltd., which brands itself Pengpai Ocean (logo: PENGPAI OCEAN X), is a developer and manufacturer of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and supporting subsea equipment based in the Qingdao area of the China (Shandong) Pilot Free Trade Zone. The company is certified as a national high-tech enterprise and recognised by Qingdao as a specialised-and-innovative and gazelle enterprise. It states that its team has worked on unmanned underwater vehicles for more than 20 years, that over half of its staff hold master's or doctoral degrees, and that it holds more than 110 granted intellectual-property rights. It hosts the Qingdao Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Technology Innovation Center and a Qingdao autonomous underwater vehicle expert workstation.

The core business is the PX AUV family, all using in-house control software and INS/DVL/GNSS (and, on larger models, USBL) integrated navigation:

  • PX-150 (vectored) and PX-160 (fin-steered) micro AUVs: 150/160 mm diameter, 1.8 m long, 20/35 kg, 100 m depth, at least 8 hours at 3 knots. Listed users include naval academies, China University of Petroleum, the Institute of Acoustics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shandong University.
  • PX-210 and PX-260 small AUVs: 210 mm x 2.1 m, 70 kg, 200 m depth; and 260 mm x 2.8 m, 100 kg, 500 m depth with vertical thrusters for hovering. A customised PX-210 reaches 15 knots.
  • PX-324 and PX-480 medium AUVs: 324 mm x 4.5 m, 300 kg, 2,000 m; and 480 mm x 6.5 m, 700 kg, 1,000 m; up to 500 km range at 2 knots. The PX-324 can be launched from shore, ship or submarine.
  • PX-533 large AUV: 533 mm x 5 m, 1,200 kg, 150 kg payload, 2,000 m or 6,000 m rating, endurance of 90 hours at 3 knots extendable to 180 hours or 1,000 km, with a dedicated launch and recovery system (LARS) and deck container.
  • PX-600: 600 mm x 6 m, 1,200 kg, 1,000/3,000/6,000 m ratings, built for swarm formation keeping and cooperative target search over multi-channel networks.
  • PX-900: 900 mm x 6 m, about 2,000 kg, 250 kg payload, 3,000/4,500/6,000 m ratings, range extendable to 1,500 km and 0.2% navigation accuracy. Listed missions include seabed mapping, deep-sea mineral exploration, mine countermeasures, rapid environmental assessment, acoustic tracking and ISR.
  • PX-F760 work AUV: a flattened 3.85 x 0.76 x 0.42 m hull, 600 kg, six to eight thrusters for six-degree-of-freedom motion, 600 m or 1,200 m rating and dual manipulators, aimed at offshore wind, pipeline and subsea-structure inspection and maintenance.

Supporting systems include an underwater docking station for PX AUVs (acoustic-optical guidance, over 90% docking success, docking in under 30 minutes, at least 80% non-contact charging efficiency and 2 Mbps non-contact data transfer) and a containerised LARS (5 x 1.2 x 1.5 m, 3 t) for AUVs of 324 to 900 mm diameter that the company says cuts the deck crew from 8-10 people to 1-2.

Pengpai also builds the PX-MiniROV (3.2 kg, 100 m), PX-050ROV and PX-100ROV work ROVs (50/150 kg, 300 m), the PX-180ARV hybrid AUV/ROV (30 kg, 200 m), a net-cleaning robot for offshore aquaculture cages (80 bar seawater jet, 1,500 square metres per hour) and a tracked seabed crawler (100 m, 100 kg payload). Components include PX-UA underwater combined antennas, thrusters, electromagnetic coupling modules for simultaneous power and data transfer, CTD sensors, pressure-tolerant batteries and the PX-CAM1920 camera. Software products cover the PX-S shore monitoring system, a marine unmanned-system simulation training platform, active-sonar online target recognition, acoustic-optical fusion recognition, multi-AUV cooperative detection and OceanX-Eddy, a mesoscale-eddy AI forecasting model trained on 60 million eddy observations. It also offers AUV/ROV marine engineering services and contract R&D.

The company reports winning an event at China's first AUV live-equipment challenge (2020), placing first overall at the second edition in 2024 (three of eight events) and winning the offshore AUV event at the first Canghai Zhixun national marine unmanned technology competition in Sanya in June 2026 with the PX-260. In 2026 it exhibited the PX-210 and PX-260 at the Beijing military intelligent technology equipment expo and the PX-260, PX-533 and PX-F760 at the 14th China International Defence Electronics Exhibition. Target markets are ocean research, offshore wind, salvage, environmental monitoring, hydropower, aquaculture and military users.
