"The Latest Breakthrough in Stroke Recovery"
US neurotech company founded 2007; developed IpsiHand, the first FDA-cleared non-invasive BCI for post-stroke upper limb motor rehabilitation.
Neurolutions, Inc. was a neurotechnology company founded in 2007 by Eric Leuthardt, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery at Washington University School of Medicine, and Daniel Moran, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. The company was established to commercialize brain-computer interface (BCI) technology developed and licensed from Washington University, with the mission of translating laboratory neuroscience into clinically deployable stroke rehabilitation devices.
Neurolutions' primary product is the IpsiHand® Upper Extremity Rehabilitation System, the first and only non-invasive, FDA-cleared BCI device for stroke rehabilitation. The IpsiHand received FDA De Novo market authorization in April 2021 — a significant regulatory milestone as the first BCI-based device authorized for neurorehabilitation. The system operates on the principle of ipsilateral motor control: using EEG electrodes to detect neural signals from the unaffected hemisphere of the brain, the device captures the stroke survivor's motor intent and translates it into actuation commands for a wearable robotic hand-and-wrist exoskeleton. This closed-loop BCI approach drives neuroplasticity by repeatedly pairing brain signals with physical movement of the affected limb, stimulating motor cortex reorganization.
The IpsiHand system includes a soft wearable robotic orthosis worn over the affected hand and wrist, an EEG headset with dry electrodes, and a software platform that guides therapy sessions. Clinical studies demonstrated significant improvements in upper extremity motor function among chronic stroke patients — a population with previously limited therapeutic options — as measured by standard assessments including the Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity scale. The IpsiHand was named Product of the Year by a scientific society, recognizing its innovation in stroke recovery.
In March 2025, Neurolutions merged with Kandu Health, a telehealth-enabled stroke recovery services company founded in 2022, to form Kandu, Inc. The merged entity is headquartered in Van Nuys, California, and completed a first close of $30 million in financing co-led by Ally Bridge Group and AMED Ventures. The combined company integrates the IpsiHand BCI hardware with personalized telehealth services, creating what it describes as an end-to-end stroke recovery platform. As of 2026, the Neurolutions brand and neurolutions.com domain remain active references for the IpsiHand product legacy.
