The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a nonprofit ocean research institute founded in 1987 by David Packard and headquartered at Moss Landing, California. MBARI develops marine robotics, sensors, and imaging systems used to study deep-sea ecosystems, ocean chemistry, and the effects of climate change in the ocean.
The institute operates remotely operated vehicles including Ventana and Doc Ricketts, both used as integrated unmanned submersible platforms for sampling and data collection, with Ventana carrying instruments such as a Sea-Bird 19plus V2 CTD package, a dissolved oxygen sensor, a transmissometer, and camera-mounted spatial lasers. MBARI's Long-Range AUV team and CoMPAS Lab develop the Tethys-class autonomous underwater vehicle, designed to operate independently for extended missions and expand the range of observations and experiments possible with uncrewed platforms.
MBARI maintains dedicated teams working on instruments, ocean observatories, software, and vehicles in support of its ocean research programs.
