Beijing Institute of Technology's Ministry of Education lab behind the BHR humanoid series, from China's first humanoid BHR-1 (2001) to Huitong.
The Key Laboratory of Biomimetic Robots and Systems is a Ministry of Education key laboratory hosted by the School of Mechatronical Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), working together with BIT's Intelligent Robotics Institute. The laboratory is headed by Prof. Huang Qiang and is located at 5 Zhongguancun South Street, Haidian District, Beijing. Its three research directions are motion bionics, biological perception and interaction mechanisms, and bionic control and system integration, within the disciplines of mechanical engineering and control science and engineering.
The group is best known for the BHR (Beijing Humanoid Robot) series. BHR-1, completed as a prototype in 2001, is described by the team as the first humanoid robot developed in China; its success led to the founding of BIT's Intelligent Robot Institute and to funding for later generations, which progressed to the sixth-generation BHR-6P by 2019. The humanoid line is now known as Huitong. In 2024 the seventh-generation Huitong was shown at the Beijing International Science and Technology Industry Expo, where it was presented as able to jump 0.51 m high and 1.08 m long, run at up to 7.5 km/h, play table tennis and perform walking, running, falling, rolling and crawling motions, using domestically produced motors and joints. Commercialisation of Huitong is handled by Beijing Institute of Technology Huahui Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd.
The laboratory's research also covers quadruped robots (including an 863 Program project on a high-performance quadruped robot), medical robots, servo systems and combat platform technology. Its 2012 annual report recorded 29 national and provincial projects worth RMB 39.83 million, 16 granted patents, 28 PhD and 52 master's graduates, and a 2012 National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award. The lab hosts international visitors and joint graduate training with overseas universities.
