"Autonomous precision agriculture"
Swedish developer of Ekobot WEAI, a 1,700 kg battery-electric autonomous robot that weeds 5-8 vegetable rows mechanically using AI vision and RTK GPS.
Ekobot is a Swedish agricultural robotics business based in Vasteras that developed one of the first fully autonomous field robots for mechanical weed control in vegetable farming. The company was founded by Ulf Nordbeck, who set out to combine robotics with sustainable food production. Ekobot AB (publ) was listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market; in June 2024 it completed the sale of its operating business to HH Agriculture Investments B.V. of the Netherlands, which took it over through a Swedish subsidiary. Tomas Tauber is CEO in Sweden, with sales for the Netherlands and Belgium handled through Homburg Holland.
The main product, Ekobot WEAI, is a battery-electric autonomous weeding robot for row vegetables such as onions, beetroot and carrots. It weighs 1,700 kg, covers 5 to 8 rows, travels at about 1 km/h and navigates by RTK GPS. An AI-based vision system distinguishes crops from weeds and controls mechanical weeding tools inside the rows. The robot runs 8 to 12 hours per day, with batteries swapped manually twice a day, and the company quotes coverage of up to 10 hectares. Safety equipment includes emergency stops, bumpers and cameras. An accompanying decision-support service, Ekobot+, uses the collected imagery to report crop status and detect anomalies in the field.
In trials during the 2022 season on an onion farm in southern Sweden, run by the advisory organisations Hushallningssallskapet and HIR Skane, Ekobot reported about 6% higher yield than conventional chemical weed control.
