COSMOS Bionics Ltd. is a product-development medical device startup founded in 2022 and headquartered at Smart Village, Giza Governorate, Egypt. The company's mission is to enable independent mobility for people with lower-limb paralysis or weakness. COSMOS Bionics has developed the COSMOS Exoskeleton, a powered hip-knee orthosis that allows users to stand, walk, ascend and descend stairs, and move in a natural gait pattern without requiring a backpack unit.
Two hardware variants exist: a rehabilitation (clinical) version weighing 13.5 kg and a personal-use version at 9.5 kg—positioning COSMOS as one of the lightest powered exoskeletons of its class worldwide. The device uses posture-based control: leaning forward initiates walking, maintaining upright posture stops movement, and leaning backward initiates sitting. A modular five-component design with self-aligning connections and a single-hand adjustment mechanism facilitates rapid donning and doffing.
The system is intended for individuals with weakness or complete paralysis in lower-extremity muscles. COSMOS Bionics claims the distinction of producing the first powered exoskeleton developed in Egypt. In March 2023 the company appeared on Shark Tank Egypt, where founders—led by CTO Mina Ashraf Sadek—secured an investment of 3 million EGP (approximately USD 100,000) for a 10% equity stake.
Proceeds are earmarked for continued R&D and initiating the ISO 13485 medical device certification pathway. The company is active on Facebook and maintains a clinical pilot with Al-Nas Hospital in Egypt.
