CAS institute founded in 1956 in Beijing; develops Q-series humanoids and surgical robots and incubated dexterous-hand maker CasiaHand.
The Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA) is a public research institute in Beijing, founded in October 1956 and re-established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1970. It describes itself as the earliest research institution in China to study the basic theories, key technologies and applications of intelligent science and technology, and it leads China's first School of Artificial Intelligence, at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the end of 2019 it reported 896 full-time staff, 663 graduate students and 59 post-doctoral researchers, including two CAS members and eleven IEEE Fellows.
CASIA's research is organised around intelligent processing of massive information, intelligent control of complex systems and integrated intelligent systems. Its units include the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, the State Key Laboratory of Management and Control for Complex Systems, the State Key Laboratory of Multimodal Artificial Intelligence Systems, an Intelligent Manufacturing Technology and System Research Center, a Precise Perception and Control Research Center, the Brainnetome Center and the Research Center for Brain-inspired Intelligence. Robotics, pattern recognition and control theory are long-standing core subjects.
On the robotics side, CASIA researchers have developed the Q-series humanoid robots; according to a CAS report from May 2025, reinforcement learning, autonomous intelligent control and feedback systems have improved their real-time performance, speed, stability and balance, and the team expects them to be used in disaster relief and unmanned factories. The same open-day report lists the Casia Hand dexterous hand and general-purpose dexterous robot, and neuro-regulation robots used for brain connectome navigation, among the institute's recent achievements. In January 2026 a team led by researcher Bian Guibin published an autonomous microscopic ophthalmic surgical robot in Science Robotics; it builds a continuously updated 3D map of the inside of the eye, fuses multi-sensor data to locate instruments from macro to micro scale and combines multi-constraint optimisation with human-in-the-loop control, achieving a 100 percent injection success rate and roughly 80 percent lower positioning error than manual operation in eyeball-model tests.
CASIA also transfers robotics technology into companies. CasiaHand Robotics, incubated from the State Key Laboratory of Multimodal Artificial Intelligence Systems, commercialises humanoid dexterous manipulation; at the 2026 World Robot Conference it showed six industrial-grade CasiaHand dexterous hands across M, X and G series, the Brain-Si 0.5 embodied brain-cerebellum model, the Wuji embodied industrial robot for production-line loading and unloading, and a data glove for collecting hand-motion data. CASIA itself exhibits at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, where it presents its intelligent-science research alongside companies spun out of its laboratories.
The institute is headquartered at 95 Zhongguancun East Road in Haidian District, Beijing. For RobotToday readers CASIA is a source of humanoid, dexterous-manipulation and medical-robot research and of spin-off companies rather than a commercial robot vendor; robot products listed here are research systems.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
CASIA research humanoids using reinforcement learning and autonomous control for balance and speed; targeted at disaster relief and unmanned factories.
Research robot for autonomous eye injections using intra-ocular 3D mapping and multi-sensor instrument localisation; published in Science Robotics, Jan 2026.
