"Shaping the Future of Vertical Flight"
Wilmington, Massachusetts coaxial drone maker founded 2014, acquired by Robinson Helicopter in 2024 as Robinson Unmanned.
Ascent AeroSystems is a coaxial unmanned aircraft designer originally headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts, founded in 2014. In April 2024 the company was acquired by Robinson Helicopter Company, and its website now redirects to Robinson's unmanned division, Robinson Unmanned, where its products continue to be sold.
Ascent's core design is a coaxial counter-rotating rotor pair inside a cylindrical airframe, built for a small footprint and stable flight in high wind. Its Spirit platform is a backpackable coaxial aircraft with a 25.5-inch rotor span, an empty weight of 4.1 pounds, a maximum takeoff weight of 13.5 pounds, and up to 6.5 pounds of dual top-and-bottom payload; it flies up to 53 minutes on dual batteries, reaches speeds over 60 mph, and is used for inspection, mapping, surveillance, search and rescue, and agricultural sensing. The current Robinson Unmanned lineup built on Ascent's platform also includes the Helius coaxial aircraft, R44 Airtruck and R66 Turbinetruck cargo variants, and a fixed-wing Spartan aircraft rated for 15.3 pounds of payload with an IP54 all-weather rating. Ascent's designs carry NDAA-compliant, Blue UAS, and Green UAS listings for US government and defense customers.
Production of the coaxial drone line has moved toward Robinson's Torrance, California facility, folding it into Robinson's wider unmanned aircraft business.
