On September 22, 2023, Microsoft revealed it would cut 268 positions within its Xbox division, including Halo Studios and Xbox Game Studios management. EVP and CCO Matt Booty noted that this reduction is part of a broader restructuring effort, with approximately three-quarters of the planned changes already implemented since July.
This significant workforce reduction follows Microsoft's earlier announcement in July to cut around 3,200 jobs across the division by the end of the 2027 fiscal year. CEO Asha Sharma described the situation as 'not healthy' and referred to the restructuring as the largest in Xbox's history, aiming to streamline operations and enhance game franchises.
Looking ahead, the next installment of the Halo series will be developed by Activision with a dedicated team, while Halo Studios will continue to support existing titles. A town hall meeting is scheduled for October 6, where Booty will discuss the progress of the reorganization and the future lineup for Xbox.
Editor's Note
The recent job cuts at Microsoft’s Xbox division reflect ongoing challenges in the gaming industry, emphasizing the need for strategic realignment. As companies navigate market pressures, the focus on consolidating teams and enhancing game franchises will be critical for maintaining competitive advantage and ensuring sustainable growth in a rapidly evolving landscape.
