Cyberattacks on Manufacturers Decline, Yet Threats Persist According to SonicWall Report

SonicWall's report reveals that while there has been a steep decline in cyberattacks targeting manufacturers, the threats remain significant. As manufacturers adopt advanced monitoring and maintenance technologies, they inadvertently expand their vulnerability to hackers. SonicWall's senior vice president, Michael Crean, emphasized that every new connection for operational convenience also opens a door for potential attackers.

The report highlights that many connected devices in factories lack modern security features, with a Hikvision camera flaw from five years ago still posing a major threat, generating 43 million hits in the first half of 2026. Despite a decrease in malware detections, SonicWall attributes this to improved detection tools rather than a reduction in attacks, indicating an increased risk of disruption as corporate offices connect with plant floors.

Looking ahead, manufacturers are urged to implement better security measures, including continuous user verification and restricted access to applications. With ten ransomware groups targeting manufacturing networks in early 2026, the sector remains at high risk. No further timeline was disclosed at the time of publication.
