The Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) is an applied research and development center at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, serving as the university's manufacturing port of entry. CDME works with companies and researchers to translate new technologies into real-world, market-ready manufactured products, bridging early-stage research and commercial production. The center is organized into multiple divisions, including Additive Manufacturing; Artificially Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (AIMS); Engineering and Testing Services; Industrial Cybersecurity; Medical Modeling, Materials and Manufacturing (M4); Materials and Process; and Program Management. Formed in 2019, the AIMS Lab develops and optimizes novel hybridized manufacturing processes, designs and tests custom sensors and controls, studies and advances human-robot interaction, benchmarks cognitive computing frameworks, and defines security and ethics protocols for advanced manufacturing.

CDME is a member of America Makes, the national additive manufacturing innovation institute, reflecting its growing additive manufacturing capabilities. Projects are executed in a 45,000 square-foot ITAR-compliant manufacturing facility on Ohio State's West Campus, which houses more than 20 million US dollars in industrial-scale equipment and employs roughly two dozen full-time technical staff. The center supports manufacturers, startups and government partners with prototyping, process development, testing, robotics integration and workforce-relevant applied research, making it a hub for manufacturing and robotics R&D in the U.S. Midwest.
