Hong Kong toy-robotics company founded 1988 by the Yanofsky brothers; creator of Robosapien and Fingerlings, employing around 100 people.
WowWee Group Limited is a privately held consumer robotics and toy company founded in 1988 by brothers Richard and Peter Yanofsky, who had relocated their research and manufacturing operation from Canada to Hong Kong six years earlier. The company is headquartered in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. Hasbro acquired WowWee in 1998, Optimal Group purchased it in 2007, and company management took it private again in 2010 through an agreement with Optimal Group.
WowWee built its reputation on Robosapien, a biomorphic robot toy launched in 2004 and designed by physicist and roboticist Mark Tilden; it sold more than 1.5 million units within five months and won a Toy of the Year award. The lineup later grew to include CHiP, an app-controlled robot dog; MiP, a self-balancing two-wheeled robot that won a Toy Industry Association TOTY award in 2015; and the dinosaur-themed Roboraptor and Miposaur. Fingerlings, a line of interactive robotic baby monkeys launched in 2017, became a global holiday sales hit, and the company has since added My Avastars customizable dolls, including a 2022 Roblox-themed collaboration with Gamefam, plus the Got2Glow Fairy Finder and licensed Nerf Super Soaker water toys.
In 2017, WowWee employed about 100 people and sells its products through major toy retailers worldwide, pairing Tilden's biomechanics background with mass-market, child-focused pricing.
